Senior Underwriter - Accident & Health (A&H)

Overview

• Underwrite new and renewal Accident & Health business within delegated authority and underwriting guidelines, ensuring profitability and portfolio sustainability.
• Develop and manage strong relationships with brokers, clients, MGAs, and other distribution partners to drive profitable growth.
• Identify, evaluate, and execute new business opportunities aligned with strategic objectives.
• Negotiate terms, conditions, pricing, and coverage structures whilst maintaining underwriting discipline.
• Monitor portfolio performance and take corrective action where necessary to achieve underwriting and financial targets.
• Work closely with actuarial and data analytics teams to assess pricing adequacy, claims trends, portfolio performance, and emerging risks.
• Support the management and oversight of delegated authority arrangements, including Coverholders, Binding Authorities, and program business where applicable.
• Contribute to portfolio strategy, business planning, and underwriting initiatives across the A&H division.
• Ensure compliance with underwriting authorities, regulatory requirements, conduct standards, and internal governance frameworks.
• Collaborate with claims, operations, compliance, legal, and risk teams to resolve underwriting and operational issues.
• Represent AXIS in broker meetings, market events, client presentations, and industry forums.
• Support and mentor junior underwriters and underwriting assistants, fostering technical development across the team.
• Maintain accurate underwriting records and utilise available systems and management information to support informed decision-making.
• Promote a culture of underwriting excellence, accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Significant underwriting experience within Accident & Health insurance, ideally within the London Market.
• Strong technical underwriting knowledge across individual and group Accident & Health products.
• Demonstrated ability to build and manage broker and client relationships.
• Experience managing portfolios against profitability, growth, and performance objectives.
• Strong understanding of Lloyd's, FCA, PRA, and other relevant regulatory requirements.
• Commercial awareness with a proven ability to negotiate effectively and make sound underwriting decisions.
• Strong analytical skills and experience interpreting portfolio, pricing, and claims data.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook, and Power BI.
• Excellent communication, presentation, and stakeholder management skills.

The Accident & Health Division is seeking a highly motivated and commercially minded Senior Underwriter to support the delivery of our global business plan through profitable underwriting, portfolio management, and broker relationship development.

This role will be responsible for underwriting a broad portfolio of Accident & Health risks across both traditional and delegated authority channels, with a focus on achieving sustainable growth while maintaining strong underwriting discipline. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing broker and client relationships, identifying new business opportunities, and contributing to strategic initiatives across the portfolio.

Working closely with internal stakeholders across actuarial, claims, compliance, operations, and delegated authority functions, you will help deliver profitable growth while ensuring excellent service standards and positive customer outcomes.
